We went to see some puppies a neighbour's dog had had. There were a dozen of them and, of course, they looked as cute as, well, as puppies at Christmas. If we'd been tempted that would have passed in a second, the puppies parents, Bull Mastiffs, were in a cage nearby. Catch their eye and it sets a 200lbs dog growling. "Friendly and lazy" says the owner, "they just lay around all day". Perhaps. The owner has a boarding barn, a stable, where she keeps mainly stallions and for a while, a goat.
Another neighbour's son has a hundred acres up the road. He's a builder not a farmer so it's just for fun. He hasa couple of Rottweilers, stout dogs and not especially tame. Recently he got himself some highland cattle, shaggy beasts with horns, all of them called "2012". They calved and became protective. The dogs continued to be curious and the cattle set upon them. The upshot of that was $5,000 in bills for emergency surgery and the cancellation of a long awaited holiday in the sun.
I'm more of a cat person myself.

Ha,Love the cat person comment.A friend in Reno trained his big goofy Bernese when she was a puppy to fetch his morning paper. One day he goes around the side of his house and there are about twenty Reno papers plus Wall St. Journals and NYTimes Aspen had picked up from around the neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteThat's wonderful!
ReplyDeleteShame about the vet bills especially at this time of year.
ReplyDeleteI love Highland Cattle - they look so pre-historic. I hope the annimals work out their territorial boundaries.
