There's an old van body across the lawn. It has benches in it and it looked like a serviceable garden shed. The roll up door has been opened since we arrived and the structure is angled in such a way that no snow blows into it. Still I thought it would be better if the door worked. Accordingly I soaked all the moving parts with WD40 and swung on the handle. Nothing happened. I soon determined the problem to be that the wires for the counter balance mechanism were tangled. I decided to disconnect the wires and try the door. Those roll up doors are heavy and it rattled shut with a satisfying cacophony.
Fine and good except that I was now inside the van shell with the door closed. The door is heavy without the counterbalance and besides there's no handle on the inside. Luckily I had an assortment of garden tools and a cell phone. After calling for help I used a crow bar and shovels to pry the door open enough for Anna to push a brick under it and jam it open slightly. We repeated this with the long side of the brick and, once that was done, we were able to push the door all the way open. The door will just have to stay open until one of us masters physics.
