Somewhere over by the fence is a compost bin standing on the ground. We had compost and the revolving bin we'd brought with us was frozen shut so I thought I'd lift the lid on the one by the fence and drop the compost in. It seemed like a viable idea.
Proper footwear is required for winter composting:

I had previously attempted to walk to the compost bin but had sunk up to my waist. Snowshoes, which I hadn't tried before, worked much better than boots though progress was slow at first.

Here it is! The compost bin is below my feet. Somewhere down there. For next winter it needs one of those reflective discs on a wire like people have to mark their driveways.

Those buildings in the middle picture are a large garage and a tool shed. When first we saw it the garage was full of tractors. The shed has light and heat and so is seems to have been a refuge, a place for a man to hide away and bond with his tractor parts.
