Just like the advert.

The original advert for the property had some gushing copy along the lines of "down below you'll be able to see your horses grazing". That's turned out to be true, though it requires squinting and ultra-zoom. This is the view down the hill from the balcony. Through the trees one can see the manure pile with a chicken on top and, beyond that, a horse.

Meanwhile, the outside of the house looks increasingly as if the people living there do hippyish things like keeping chickens and home knitting their yoghurt.

Within, the inevitable moment draws near

the question now is whether or not the kittens will arrive before the chickens get the chop. If the timing is right we could briefly be custodians of some three dozen animals, rather more I ever imagined.

    Hi there,

Just wanted to thank you for the cautionary tale earlier in June (I have been meaning to say before but it is finding the time!) of the country "lifestyle". I must admit I don't think we will be entering into it quite as completely as yourselves - we don't plan to keep horses for example, just chickens and goats etc and only a few of each.

Having said that, I should imagine a couple of years down the line the menagerie will expand but hopefully we will have the sense to increase it gently...

O and fingers-crossed for the kittens btw!

  2. We haven't yet tried goats but chickens are next to no work and hugely entertaining. They don't require much in the way of equipment either. I don't think you can make money from them but you certainly know an egg is fresh if you saw it fall from the chicken.

Luck would be that the donor of the pregnant cat found a home for all the kittens!

  4. "would be"

She'll take one but the remaining umpteen minus one are our problem.

  6. No kittens yet and I find that a bit puzzling. I think this must mean that Ronnie became pregnant seconds before coming to us. I suppose we should count ourselves lucky that the tom wasn't still attached.
