Brushing Elbows with the Rich and Famous

On Saturday evening I went out with a neighbour of mine to a barn dance held by a hunt club. The dance also featured both live and silent auctions, jack russel terrier races, and whip cracking competitions, in addition to a very well-catered dinner. It was a different world, I can tell you that. We drove into an equestrian estate community where none of the properties were bought for less than 4 million. The barn that the dance was in was nicer than my house. The wood panelling in the arena was pristine and gleaming. The horses were pristine and gleaming. The guests were pristine and gleaming. And then there was us, the Melancthon contingent...

A tall man was going around shaking people's hands. "Hi, I'm David Peterson," he boomed to me. I think I was supposed to have some sort of reaction to this. I thought maybe he was the master of the hunt or something, so figured I had to say something. I'm afraid that an equally booming "hi, I'm Sarah's friend," was the best I had to offer. Later, I asked if I was supposed to have known who that man was. Yep. He was the former Premier (that's like a governer) of Ontario. Well, there you go. I've never even met a mayor, let alone a governer, and now I've shaken his hand at a hunt club event.

It was a fabulous evening, and a glimpse into a VERY different world. However, note to self: just becauase you HAVE five drinks tickets, doesn't mean you have to USE five drinks tickets.
