Not Quite Dinner.

The chickens are getting to be a healthy size:

And so we got to wondering how much longer they'll need feeding. Catching them is a game, there's a great deal of flapping and fussing involved but once caught they're curiously relaxed in the scale.

They're still only about three pounds so they've at least another fortnight to go. That'll give them about twice the lifespan of the genetically modified supermarket birds.

  1. Are you killing the cockerels or all of them? The hens look really good so you not keeping them for eggs? Ahh, you live my dream (horses, country, hens laying eggs...) Beebop.

  2. Our current plan is to keep one cockerel, probably a Rhode Island Red, kill the others and to keep the hens for eggs. We're going to be lazy about the killing and plucking business; have it done for us.

Whether or not we're living a dream is debatable but it's certainly an experience. Our current domestic wish list includes a truck, better fences and some guns. None of these are things I dreamed of in childhood.

  3. If we keep a RIR rooster and put him to the Barred Rock hens, we'll get Black Sex links. Obviously, if we put the RIR rooster to a RIR hen, we'll get more RIRs. So, next year we'll have another mixed breed flock, but I don't know what we'll do the year after that. I have no idea what happens if you breed a RIR rooster to a Black Sex link hen.
