Mennonite Snowmobile.

Or, for those reading in Alaska, snowmachine.

We came upon this fellow in a heavy suit staggering at the side of the road maybe thirty feet behind a carriage and pair. He looked like Shane McGowan dressed for a Hovis advert.

Looking closely we saw that there was a trapeze-like frame attached to the buggy and from that a rope to the staggerer. Moments before our arrival he'd been on skis, one lies behind him on the snow. There were two other yuts in the carriage giggling at the unbalanced one.

I suppose they'd borrowed the family vehicle with no word of the joy riding pranks they intended. Youth of today, mutter, mutter.

  1. It's all downhill from here...well actually probably not, it's flat Ontario, so that would be why they're trying to ski on the straight!

Still, a brilliant post and makes me want to visit so we can go and gawp at these fascinating people.

  2. Hey, any time the roads are open come by and we'll go up to Shrigley and harass them.

On Saturday we went to look at a dog, more on that to follow I expect, it was out past St. Jacobs so we stopped at the farmer's market to stock up on summer sausage. Lots of Mennonites there. A better place though is one of Carson's horse auctions:

there you can see dozens of Mennonites trading vital farm equipment; hoofed farm equipment.

  3. What a great idea by these mennonites! In high school we used to bumper ski off the backs of cars going through the neighborhood. You ran out behind the guy and grabbed onto the bumper in a crouching position.Needless to say you needed snow on the road to do it.There are a bunch of Mennonites below Rochester around Penn Yan and many are buckwheat farmers. They have the neatest farms in the area.
