I suppose a local would have reached for his gun. I just wondered how much longer there will be deer. There's an area of woodland north of us that's unoccupied and has trails through it, a few people ride or hike there but it's mostly unused. We got a flyer last week offering the wood for sale in two parcels, we don't have anything like the price asked and fear that it might go for development. Already northeast of us there's a potential subdivision. Far north of us places like Barrie and Wasaga Beach are dormitory towns for Toronto and there are ghastly projects being thrown up in places like Shelburne and Dundalk. None of these places has anything to offer except a cheap house and access to the highway. Each identi-house implies an extra single occupant car driving fifty plus miles each way every day. I do that now, of course, but I do it so as to live somewhere that doesn't look like the rest of the GTA. I'd be sorry to see the local farms disappear under the encroachment of the exurbs while, at the same time, feeling that as an immigrant it's not really my place to criticise the Canadian love of the mall, big box store and tract house.
Have you considered banding together with some neighbours to buy the wooded area for posterity?
ReplyDeleteHave you considered banding together with some other neighbours to buy the wooded area and keep it as commonland. Thus protecting it from the developers?
ReplyDeleteThe horsey neighbour suggested that, he used to ride there often, but the woodland is being offered in two pieces at over $300,000 each. There aren't many neighbours and certainly not many with that kind of spare change.
